Ahh, Hot Chocolate! The perfect drink for those cold winter nights. The world loves hot chocolate, I’ve certainly never meet someone who doesn’t love it. Like so many people, I’ve always used the instant hot chocolate packets, for convenience and because I LOVE HOT CHOCOLATE!!! But the instant mix never quite satisfies my craving.
One year, during the holiday season, I was feeling particularly festive and wanted to make all these different holiday foods and drinks. The only recipe that stuck during my holiday crazy was this homemade hot chocolate recipe. Now I’ll never go back to instant hot chocolate, this recipe is just as quick and even more heavenly and divine. Plus being able to customise your hot chocolate is awesome and the possibilities are endless.
Now, I know making your own drinks, can seem a little scary but trust me, this is worth it. I promise once you try this recipe, you’ll never want instant hot chocolate again.
The Best Homemade Hot Chocolate Recipe
Prep: 5 minutes!!!
Ingredients:
- 1 Cup of milk (I normally use full cream for this recipe but any kind works well)
- 3 Tablespoons of semi-sweet chocolate chips or chopped dark chocolate (I’m very generous with my serving size here)
- Mini marshmallows for topping
- Chocolate sauce for topping
- You can also add your own ingredients/ideas for customisation
Method:
- In a small saucepan, heat the milk over medium high heat until steaming and small bubbles form around the edge (but don’t let it boil over, learn from my mistakes!). Add the chocolate chips and let melt, stirring occasionally, then whisk until smooth.
- Whisk in any desired mix-ins. Serve hot with desired toppings.
Top Tip: spoil yourself a little on this one.

Your photos are incredible! This hot chocolate is making me salivate!!
